Welcome
parents and caregivers!
Library:
Library will start next Tuesday - please ensure your child has a library bag (which can be a shopping bag) so our books remain protected. Thank you.
Swimming: | During swimming week, the children will be swimming everyday in our school pool. Please ensure your child comes to school with a swimming bag containing their swimming clothes and a towel. We allow goggles but your child must be able to put them on themselves as time constraints prevent us from this assistance. Our swimming weeks: week 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. We swim from 1:40pm to 2:10pm. YES PLEASE - if you can assist during this time, your help will be well received. |

Focus for week 1
Art - Me, You, Us
This term our concept is 'Citizenship'. We will be looking at ourselves, groups we belong to and volunteer groups. The key understanding is that we have right and responsibilities. This link will help the children look at line and how they can use a coloured pencil in different ways to create texture.
We will also be looking at the shapes we need to create a portrait of our self or others.

Alphabet and Phonics:
The children will be looking at the letter names and matching sounds for the letters 's', 'a', and 't'. It is important that the letters being learnt each week are reinforced at home. The goal this term is to know all the names and matching sounds of the alphabet.
The buttons below will take you to the appropriate blog post in the teaching section. You can visit these to reinforce the classroom learning at home.

Reading:
This week we will be looking at the title and what we think the book will be about.
The children also begin to predict what will happen next. It is important that the children use the pictures to predict and confirm what is happening in the story. These are important clues to help children achieve and feel successful.
The children will begin to learn how to match their voice with the words, so could you please help them point to each word as they read it.
It is really important that you talk about the story each night.
Please keep the books that come home each night in their reading bag. This allows them to read two books that have the same high frequency words in them, for example, 'the'.

Religious Education:
The year begins with 'prayer'. The children will come to an understanding that prayer is listening and talking to God.
Health and Physical Education:
It is very important that the children become independent at school, for example hanging up their own bags, looking after their own belongings, tying their own shoes (a couple of fun video clips on tying shoe laces are shown below).

Golden Time:
St Mary's School is a Golden Rules contributing school. This means that we follow a set of rules (provided below) and are rewarded for good behaviour.
Please feel free to print out a copy of the poster I have made below and attach it to your fridge or other suitable place in your home. Your support of these rules is much appreciate and I am sure you will agree that they will benefit our children in all walks of life.
