This week I will be doing entry testing now that the boys have been at school for a month. This looks at what they have learnt about print in writing and reading. It also includes an oral language assessment. When I have completed the tests and analysed them I will sit down with you after school and talk about what has been learnt and the next learning steps. If you already know a day at the end of week 5 or in week 6 that would suit you please let me know and I will book you in.
It's great to see the boys trying hard and enjoying learning. Thanks mums and dads for your support with reading, letter sound links and words to read. You really do make a tremendous difference!
What's On
This week we begin the Season of Lent - The preparation for Easter.
On Tuesday it is Shrove Tuesday. This was the day when people ate the food they would not be able to eat when fasting during lent.. for example, flour and eggs. On Shrove Tuesday there will be pancakes for $1:00. If you wish to pre-order a pancake for your child on Monday please bring $1:00 and your child will receive a pancake on Tuesday .
Monday: 2:30 p.m a parents meeting with Dave, Leon and Anne. All parents interested are welcome to come. Pancakes can be pre-ordered for Tuesday
Tuesday: Shrove Tuesday. Pancakes at lunch time. The children will all be at a promise ceremony today where we think about what we can do for God, for example, being kind.
Wednesday: Ash Wednesday. There will be a liturgy in the church at 10:00 a.m.
Friday: For Golden Time we will have the balloon tag race as the children had an extra swim last week.. assembly at 2:10 p.m.
Focus for literacy
What is the difference between a letter and a word.
Some of the books we are reading now are at level (2). At this level it is important to go back and read if they are stuck and get their mouth ready for the word by looking at and making the first sound of the word. They are also taught to use picture clues and think about what would make sense with the words that came before. Some of the children need to look at and talk about the picture more to help them with meaning.
Letter / sounds of the week. Nn, Vv, Yy, Zz
Focus for maths.
Some children are learning to know the number that just comes after another number up to 10 or 20. Reading numbers to 20 for most children and to 50 for some.
We will be continuing to join numbers and also to introduce subtracting numbers to 10. We continue to work on the concept of '1 more' than another number up to 10 or 20 (wherever they can count to).
Focus for Religious Education - Lent
They are cooled and on Ash Wednesday a cross is placed on each child's head in church with the ashes. The kids love this and it always creates a lot of smiles and talk.
In class we will be talking about how we can thank God and follow Him, for example, by helping each other and giving what we can. It would be great if you could also simply encourage your children to give and love others in ways they can think of.
Have a great week parents!
