Congratulations to Ahana Prasad and Kayden McDonald for receiving Principal awards at last week's assembly. Ahana received her award for amazing spelling and Kayden for attitude and progress in writing.
Most children are becoming independent learners which is one of my major goals in order to get them ready for Year Two. Please help at home to reinforce independence in whatever ways you can.
I have put new words on their spelling cards. Some of these words were not known on their last spelling test. They need to learn and then re-learn many words over the year until the words are secure.
Holiday reading logs are due on Tuesday the 28th July.
I hope you enjoyed looking through your child's portfolio to see the progress they have made, what they have been learning and doing. Thanks also for the positive comments and goals you filled in. Can I have them all back by the end of the week please so they are ready to have term 3 and 4 work placed inside.
What's On
Maori Language Week: We will be using the language in counting, the calendar, instructions, songs and other ways. It would be great if you could find ways to use the language at home..
Information on how to make a time was on last weeks newsletter. Any problems please e mail or send a me a note. If we have had a meeting recently there is no need to make an interview unless you wish to.
Monday: Library at 2:15 pm
Tuesday: The NED show at 9am in the hall. NED N stands fo rever give up, Encourage others and D o your best. The website for further information is www.thenedshow.com. Your child brought home a notice letting you know that NED yo-yo's are for sale. These will be available next week if you wish to purchase any.
Please keep in mind from last week the comments I posted about our focus on reading for meaning and searching for meaning using pictures and what has happened or just happened in the text. Re-telling and talking about stories at home is a crucial way you can help support your child to become a fluent and understanding reader.
It would be helpful if over the weekend you could sit with your child and read two or more books from the week in their reading bag. The more they read, the more fluent they become and, the more they can link into meaning. There is so much value in reading easy and familiar books. This is where they practice strategies when stuck on tricky words, develop fluency and expression.
Friday: Many children enjoyed making paper planes in the morning so for Golden Time we will experiment to see how far we can make our planes go. If there is anything you would like the children to do at golden time this term please let me know and we can work together to make it happen.
Have a neat week parents.
